8 Useful Tips for House Removals

Moving home is an exciting if somewhat stressful time. Like any new adventure, it takes careful planning to get it right. With that in mind, whether it’s your first move or your fifth, we’ve put together a list of handy tips to help take the stress away.

1. Make a moving checklist

Putting together a moving checklist of all the things you need to get done before the big day arrives is a great way to keep on track of important tasks. It will also help you to plan how much time you’ll need accordingly, so by moving day you’ll be packed and ready to go, not running around at the last minute! Some tasks you will need to tick off early, like booking your removal company. This will give you peace of mind, knowing you haven’t missed anything. You can find some great examples of moving checklists online.

2. Find removal companies

Spend some time researching reputable removal companies in your area. Make sure you compare quotes from a few moving companies, to ensure you’re getting the best deal. Good removal companies will provide details of their charges and may offer a discount if you do your own packing or provide your own packing materials. They should also have suitable insurance.

At AVM, we offer competitive prices on house removals. Prices can be estimated over the phone or by a visit from one of our experienced surveyors. We also offer fixed price or capped by the hour options. For more information visit our removals page. ‎

3. Clean your house

You’ll want to leave your house sparkling clean for the next occupants. You may want to hire a professional cleaning company to save some time, in which case, as with finding removal companies, do your research.

If you choose to do it yourself, make sure you clean anything being left behind, such as furniture or appliances, including underneath and behind; get rid of any rubbish; dust and wipe down surfaces; and vacuum and mop the floors. If you are using lots of chemicals, open some windows to keep the room ventilated.

This is also a great opportunity for clearing out unwanted possessions and unnecessary clutter. Set aside a box for things you plan to sell or donate. You could even offer any items for sale on sites like Gumtree or eBay. Or invite a few friends and neighbours over to see if there is anything they’d like to take off your hands (including food or cleaning items you aren’t planning on taking with you). As they say… “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. Sites like Freecycle are great too for any items you can’t sell.

Another note on cleaning: Make sure if you are planning on taking any hazardous materials like cleaning products with you, that they are packed separately by type, securely and are well labelled.

4. Visit your new area

If you can, visit your new area before your move, to familiarise yourself with it. Take note of where important things like grocery shops, doctor’s surgeries and places to park are. This will help you to settle in more quickly to your new home, as you’ll feel a little less lost when you arrive.

5. Packing

The biggest task that lies ahead of you is most certainly the packing. Hopefully, you’ll have managed to shift all your unwanted items, so that you are only taking the things you really need. Here are a few key tips for packing for house removals:

Where to get moving boxes

You will need moving boxes in different sizes including small, medium, large and wardrobe boxes (alternatively, you can watch the below video for a tutorial on making your own wardrobe packing boxes).

Most moving companies can provide packing boxes in a variety of different sizes. Other places to find moving boxes include your local supermarket, friends who have recently moved and sites like Gumtree or Freecycle. You will also need packing tape, bubble wrap, newspapers for wrapping and stuffing boxes, blankets or stretch wrap for furniture, labels and a marker pen.

How to pack correctly

One key piece of advice for packing boxes for moving home is to do it one room at a time. This will make it easier for you to stay organised, in addition to knowing where each box will need to go in the new house. Start with rooms you use the least, such as the spare bedroom or study, packing items you aren’t likely to need beforehand like sports equipment or books.

Full service? Or DIY?

Of course, you may want to save yourself the trouble and opt for a packing service from your removal company. Keep in mind that items you pack yourself may not be covered by your removal company’s insurance policy.

AVM offers a professional packing service by experienced liveried personnel, treating your belongings with the utmost care and consideration. We also provide packing kits if you prefer to do it yourself.

Remember: when packing boxes, safety is of the utmost importance. Avoid overpacking boxes, making them too heavy to lift; don’t lift heavy items alone or unsupervised; and pack heavy items like books in small boxes and lighter items in large boxes.

6. Moving day

When the big day arrives, set an alarm and get up early, giving you plenty of time before the moving van arrives. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, for any last-minute jobs that might need doing. Do a final check of your moving checklist.

Packing a moving survival kit is a great idea to prepare for the day ahead. This could include snacks, chargers, entertainment for the kids like books or tablets, water and a first aid kit. It is also a clever plan to pack a box with the items you’ll need immediately when you arrive at your new home such as toiletries, canned and boxed food, a change of clothes, towels, the kettle and any teas/coffees/milk for hot drink making, plates, cups and cutlery, rubbish bags and a craft knife for opening moving boxes – make sure this goes into the moving van last.

Have all your important documents you might need with you in your survival kit, including any with details of the move from the removal company.

Finally, make sure you are ready to leave once the moving van is packed. Some removal companies may charge extra if they are kept waiting at the destination.

7. Give yourself plenty of time

Make sure you allow more than enough time to get all your tasks done before you move, leaving space for breaks and adequate rest. Spend time with friends and family (if you can get them to help you, even better!), go out for a meal or to the cinema, enjoying your last few weeks in your old house before starting your new adventure. By the time moving day comes around you will be rested and ready.

8. Get moving!

Having given yourself plenty of time, booked a reliable moving company and ticked off all the items on your checklist, you should be ready to go. Good luck, and happy moving!
